Choose Your Program

From a single day on a university campus to a two-year scholars program, there is a Central Louisiana AHEC program for every stage. All programs are free to participants.

Academic Year

Middle School

A free in-school program bringing a health professional guest speaker and a hands-on activity to middle school students each month, August through May. Built to remove the transportation barrier rural students face.

1 Week

Junior High (7th–8th)

A free half-day summer camp giving junior high students a hands-on introduction to more than five health professions, with simulation activities, science experiments, and CPR certification included.

3 Weeks

High School (9th–11th)

A free hospital-based volunteer program of approximately 105 hours across 12+ rotations. Students earn ½ high school AHEC elective credit and CPR certification while exploring health careers first-hand.

1 Day

High School (10th–12th)

A free activity-filled day investigating nursing and allied health fields at LSU Alexandria or Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, with hands-on sessions across a dozen departments.

1 Day

High School (10th–12th)

A free day exploring physical therapy, nursing, medicine, exercise science, and anatomy interactions at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville, offered in partnership with the university.

1 Day

High School (11th–12th)

A free day on an LSU Health School of Medicine campus with 8+ rotations and topics. Students practice diagnostic skills, visit the Gross Anatomy Lab, and learn what medical school admission requires.

1 Day

High School (11th–12th)

A free day at the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans exploring dentistry, dental hygiene, dental forensics, and dental lab technology, with admissions guidance and charter bus transportation provided.

1 Week

High School Seniors

Up to 40 hours of one-on-one job shadowing with a primary care physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner near the student’s hometown. Open to students who have completed 2 or more AHEC programs.

2 Years

College / Pre-Med

A free two-year program equipping pre-med students from rural Louisiana to apply to LSU Health Shreveport, with biannual retreats, mock interviews with a real admissions team, and discounted MCAT materials.

2 Years

College & Medical School

A two-year, 160-hour program for health professions students, combining 40 clinical and 40 didactic hours each year across six core topic areas, all delivered in rural and underserved settings.

Up to 4 Weeks

Medical School

A summer rotation placing first-year medical students one-on-one with a rural primary care preceptor, with a stipend of up to $1,200. Offered with LSU Health Shreveport and the Louisiana AHECs.
